Doug Baldwin Family Combine

Doug Baldwin Family Combine

Though it may not be football season yet, our very own Seahawks player Doug Baldwin will be hosting the Family Combine this Saturday at the Renton Memorial Stadium.  The Family Combine is an interactive event for individuals of all ages! Participants will test their skills in ten activities including the 40-Yard Dash, Punt Return, 20-Yard Shuttle, and a Stair Climb. Between running, jumping, throwing and catching…this collaborative event has it all! Proceeds from this event will help the City of Renton build the new Family First Community Center.

Doug Baldwin, the City of Renton, Renton School District and HealthPoint have partnered together to build the Family First Community Center in the Cascade and Benson neighborhood. Their hope is that this new community center will offer health, wellness, recreational and educational opportunities to the local youth and families. While this community center is important to the City of Renton, it is a project near and dear to Doug Baldwin and the Seattle Seahawks. You can read more about their insight on the new Family First Community Center here.

The event will begin at three different wave times, 9:00 – 10:00am, 10:30 – 11:30am and 12:00 – 1:00pm. You can register as a participant online for $30. Participants will want to check in prior to their wave time to receive their activity card, field wristband and event shirt. If you aren’t up for the combine, you can purchase a Spectator ticket for $5 which will give you access to the field and stadium. With a Spectator ticket, you can take photos and videos of your friends and family!

Parking will be available in the Renton Memorial Stadium, south parking lot only. You will not want to miss this fun, family-friendly event!

Mercer Island Schools & School District Recognized in King County’s “Green Schools Program” for Continued Conservation Efforts

Mercer Island Schools & School District Recognized in King County’s “Green Schools Program” for Continued Conservation Efforts

The Mercer Island School District has once again received recognition for their achievements in the Country Green School Program. Local schools, including Island Park and Lakeridge Elementary Schools, and both the Middle School and High School have been recognized for “continued multi-year performance.”

If you’re unfamiliar with the program, it’s geared to help grow and develop understanding and education in certain “green” categories, which include, waste reduction and recycling, energy conservation, water conservation, and pollution prevention, and the most recent number shows record-breaking results in 2018.

The program also educates students and staff to only recycle materials they know can be recycled, which helps reduce contamination in recycling bins.

The program’s vision encompasses county-wide support in all school districts and schools to support the continued education and understanding in the conservation practices and engage their students and staff in environmental stewardship.

In 2018, some 290 K-12 schools across King County have benefited from this program, including the Issaquah, Snoqualmie Valley, Mercer Island, Lake Washington, Northshore School Districts, among others. Click here to see the entire list.

Four Mercer Island schools made on the 2017-2018 Sustaining Green School recognition list, including Island Park and Lakeridge Elementary, Islander Middle School and Mercer Island Schools, which were also recognized for “continued multi-year performance.”

One Mercer Island school, Northwood Elementary, made it on the Level Three list for water conservation and pollution prevention. The same school made it on the Level Two list for energy conservation. West Mercer Elementary was last in the rankings for Level One contributions towards waste reduction and recycling.

Interesting factoids can be found on the “Success Story” portion of the Green Schools Program, but some of Mercer Island’s highlights include:

  • In May 2013, the Mercer Island School District received the Recycler of the Year – Youth Education award from the Washington State Recycling Association.
  • In 2009-2010, the district’s garbage disposal costs were cut in half after waste reduction and recycling programs were expanded.
  • Polystyrene (Styrofoam) in school cafeterias were eliminated district-wide, and all trays, dishware, and utensils are either “durable or compostable.”

Individual success stories can be viewed here by clicking on the school you’re interested in looking at!

IN OTHER NEWS, the Mercer Island School District has updated the first day of the 2018-2019 school year for kindergarten students. Find out more by clicking here.

You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown at Seattle’s Musical Theatre

You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown at Seattle’s Musical Theatre

If you are hoping to take cover from the Seattle rain this weekend, you may want to round up the family and head to the Seattle Musical Theatre. Each day this weekend, there will be a live performance of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”.

Originally produced in 1967 by cartoonist Charles M. Schultz, You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown was based on the characters in his well-known comic strip “Peanuts”. The whole gang, including Lucy, Schroeder, Sally, Linus, Snoopy and the man himself, Charlie Brown will be brought to life on-stage. When the play was first staged in 1967 in New York, there was no official script. The six actors performed ten songs and based their performance off ten years’ worth of Peanuts cartoons. Celebrating the 50th Anniversary last year, the play remains to stay true to its charm and wit. You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown explores life through the eyes of Charlie Brown and his beloved friends. From Valentine’s Day to baseball season, and positivity to despair, this play captures memorable little moments from Charlie Brown. It is guaranteed to capture the hearts of all ages in the audience!

There will be a show this evening and Saturday, June 9th beginning at 7:30 PM and a show Sunday, June 10th at 2:00 PM. With the convenience of purchasing tickets online, you can also select your seating at the same time! Adult tickets cost $40 and Youth, Senior and Military tickets cost $35.

If you are interested in volunteering, the Seattle Musical Theatre is always looking for new volunteers. For more information, please visit the volunteer page.

Door-to-Door Pet License Canvassing Starts May 5th

Door-to-Door Pet License Canvassing Starts May 5th

Keep an eye out this week for door-to-door Pet License Canvassing. Mercer Island is part of the Regional Animal Services of King County, otherwise known as RASKC, and they’ve coordinated with the City of Mercer Island to canvas door-to-door in neighborhoods south of SE 40th Street to educate residents about pet licenses and offer resources for residents and their companions.

This canvas is set to start later this week, on May 5th.

Mercer Island’s last canvas was in 2010, so now is a great time to offer the benefits of pet licensing, which include:

  • Reuniting owners with lost pets
  • Providing licensed pets a free ride home the first time they get lost
  • Saving lives by funding King County’s pet adoption centers
  • Investigating of animal cruelty or neglect
  • Responding to reports of dangerous or nuisance animals

You can identify canvassers by their County logo bright blue shirts, name badges, and business cards.

If you’d like to get a head start, you can purchase your pet’s license from the KingCounty.gov website. If you already have a license, you can renew or updated on the King County website, or at any of these local locations.

For any major concerns or issues, please contact Mercer Island Police Department Commander Jokinen at 206-275-7914.
