Mercer Island School District Gets Top Ranking on Recent Survey

The Mercer Island School District has long been known for its high emphasis on academics and extra-curriculars, and 2017-2018 reports show Mercer Island reigning over other Washington School Districts. Noted as a “friendly environment,” the district (MISD) strives to foster children and young adults by converting information into knowledge.

In a recent survey of over 9,500 schools, performed by BackgroundChecks.org awards the Mercer Island School District as Washington’s best public-school system. Mercer Island yields a 96.6% graduation rate, which is 15+% higher than the state-wide average of 81.9%.

Other top-producing schools include (2) the Lake Washington School District, (3) the Snoqualmie Valley School District, (4) the Bellevue School District, and (5) the Camas School District.

Though these figures vary from the Niche.com analysis, Niche also uses reviews from students and parents to configure their Best Schools. Their algorithm sets the Mercer Island School District as the second in Washington state. Check out this list of top school districts in Washington state, from Niche.com.

Complete and update report cards can be found on any school district and individual school statewide from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Washington State Report Card portal.

In such a diverse and ever-changing world, Mercer Island sets the example in education and sets its children as their top priority and offers accelerated and advanced courses to facilitate their learning.

A New Interlocal Agreement Around King County Will Help Mercer Island Fire Department Response Quicker to Fires

A New Interlocal Agreement Around King County Will Help Mercer Island Fire Department Response Quicker to Fires

The City Council approved a new Interlocal Agreement, which promotes “seamless emergency response among the fire departments throughout King County.”

In the past, Mercer Island has largely relied on Bellevue’s Fire Department and response systems to help with our city’s larger fire instances, but this new Interlocal Agreement (ILA), will allow for the closest available emergency response unit(s) to respond to 911 calls, “regardless of fire department jurisdiction.” This is a huge enhancement on Mercer Island’s current “mutual aid agreement,” which mainly bring aid from the City of Bellevue because it will allow Mercer island to call on help from the City of Seattle, “which previously required its firefighters to obtain permission to travel outside city limits.”

The City of Mercer Island provides “minimum staffing” to our fire department, which is seven firefighters at any given time. Not only will this newer, enhanced agreement heighten the city’s response times to larger events, such as house or multi-house fires, simultaneous situations, or an active shooter scenario.

For reference, the City of Mercer Island specifies that the ordinary house fire on the island requires 35-42 firefighters and a “typical” multiple casualty incident requires 12 or more firefighters to respond.

With the prime objective of safety on the Island, this seems like a great service to local residents and businesses. Fire Chief, Steve Heitman says, “We expect having this new seamless response system countywide will lead to improved coordination and faster response times, which in turn saves lives.”

Mercer Island to Host Arbor Day and Join Tree City USA

Mercer Island to Host Arbor Day and Join Tree City USA

In a February 20th City Council meeting, City of Mercer Island Mayor Debbie Bertlin offered Proclamation No. 215, which stated that, to raise awareness and urge all citizens to support and encourage the resurgence of local forestry efforts; and emphasizing urban forests not only for the beauty they offer, but the benefits they provide to our residents, communities, and region.

Read the full Proclamation here

An Arbor Day celebration is the “final requirement needed to obtain the Tree City USA designation,” which both recognizes local city tree support and “makes the city eligible for certain urban forestry grant programs.” The designation provides a platform on which the city and citizens of Mercer Island can celebrate its commitment and achievements of the challenges facing urban tree canopies across the globe.

There are four core values each interested city must adhere to for both consideration and ongoing recognition, including A Tree Board or Department, A Tree Care Ordinance, A Community Forestry Program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita, and An Arbor Day Observance and Proclamation.

Mercer Island’s Arbor Day celebration will be on October 20th, 2018 at Luther Burbank Park, “in conjunction with the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust Annual Tree Planting Celebration.”

Mercer Island will be Washington’s 91st recognized city, alongside other local cities committed to urban forestry, such as Bellevue, Clyde Hill, Kirkland, Medina, Redmond, and Seattle. With 34 years committed, Ellensburg is Washington’s longest holder of the Tree City USA designation.

Mercer Island’s Beloved Rainbow Park Experiences a Massive Overhaul

Mercer Island’s Beloved Rainbow Park Experiences a Massive Overhaul

After the massive and overwhelmingly positive response from Island Crest Park’s facelift, the City of Mercer Island was eager to start their next project at the South Mercer Fields, specifically the New South Mercer Playground.

With collaboration between the Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Department and the Mercer Island Preschool Association, this beautiful park proves an enhancement to the area. Other parts of the park experienced additional updates in past years, and now it’s time to renovate “Rainbow Park”.

Staff and contractors are completing each new, natural-style component of this one-of-a-kind playground – and the first in our region. New components are expected to include a climbing structure, webbed climber, a rock slide and other nature-inspired swings, benches, and play equipment.

Expected completion is only a couple weeks ahead, so keep your eyes out and ears open for details!

If you haven’t checked out the new Island Crest Park, you should plan a few hours there the next sunny weekend we get!

MORE ABOUT THE SOUTH MERCER PLAYFIELDS: Located on the south end of Mercer Island, nestled between Islander Middle School and Lakeridge Elementary, the South Mercer Playfields offers four adult-sized softball diamonds (65 feet bases), playground equipment (currently under construction, April 2018), and an all-weather field with energy efficient stadium lights. A quarter-mile track circles the all-weather soccer/football field.

City of Mercer Island to Launch NEW Rideshare Pilot Program

City of Mercer Island to Launch NEW Rideshare Pilot Program

In March, the City of Mercer Island unanimously voted to launch a pilot ridesharing program to help Island commuters to travel from home to their off-island jobs. By partnering with established rideshare providers, Lyft and Uber, the City of Mercer Island hopes to relieve some of the traffic Islanders have experienced since the Light Rail project began.

To begin on April 23rd, this 6-month long program will open transit options and access to the Mercer Island Park & Ride without the need to drive a personal vehicle. As traffic pressures “mount, all 447 stalls [at the Mercer Island Park & Ride] now fill by 7:00am on most weekdays, forcing many Islanders” to drive into nearby cities instead.

By using funds from the October settlement with Sound Transit, the city will sponsor discounted rides on Mercer Island only, according to the following rate schedule:

  • Cost to each rider (months 1-3): Flat fee of $2 per ride
  • Cost to each rider (months 4-6): Flat fee of $2 per shared ride, $5 per solo ride

The service will be available Monday through Friday, 24 hours/day, and all rides must originate or terminate at the Park & Ride, located at 8000 North Mercer Way.

Please peek through the full news release here.

The City has committed on a continued search for other pilot mobility programs, such as bikeshare and carpooling services, so stay tuned into the city for more upcoming options!

Parenting Workshop on Teen Anxiety on April 3rd – New Calendar Update

Parenting Workshop on Teen Anxiety on April 3rd – New Calendar Update

On Tuesday, April 3rd the Mercer Island Community and Event Center will hold a Parenting Workshop focusing on Teen Anxiety. In partnership with the Department of Youth and Family Services Community Advisory Board, the “Successful Parenting on Mercer Island: Harmful Stress and Its Impact on Teen Health” workshop will helpfully open eyes to the Island’s youth anxiety and stress-related situation and how to best handle and support our children. Youth and Family Services Director, Cindy Goodwin, will be moderating the event.

Addressing anxiety among the Island’s youth is a top priority for the Healthy Youth Initiative, which comprises of Island volunteers and HYI staff. Their data articulates that 58% if 8th Graders, 60% of 10th Graders, and 70% of 12th Graders “report being bothered by feeling nervous, anxious or on edge.”

In “fireside chat style,” this workshop will feature a panel comprised of youth and adult professionals and will include discussion and advice on how parents might address anxiety and stress with their children.

Department of Youth and Family Services Community Advisory Board invite all Island parents and teens to attend this free event. Drinks and light refreshments will be provided.

For more information, please contact Derek Franklin, YFS Program Manager at derek.franklin@mercergov.org or call (206) 275-7745.
