Mercer Island’s Restoration Events for 2018

Mercer Island’s Restoration Events for 2018

Each year, hundreds of hours are donated by Mercer Island citizens to help maintain the community’s parks and open spaces. This mutually beneficial opportunity, allows people to enjoy time outdoors and assist the community through various maintenance projects.

Though the Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Department works with professional contractors and non-profit partners, such as Mountains to Sound Greenway and EarthCorps, community volunteers are an integral part of removing invasive plants, replanting native foliage, and general maintenance in Mercer Island parks.

It’s a great opportunity to work on your own schedule and foster the community’s ongoing efforts to quell invasive plants and restore native plants so the area.

If you’re thinking about volunteering, make sure to dress for the weather, and bring a jacket, even if the weather says it’ll stay warm and sunny. You never know with Washington weather…

Mercer Island Farmers Market: July 31, 2016

Mercer Island Farmers Market Today will be all about beverages available at Mercer Island Farmers Market. You can quench your thirst with Kombucha, tea soda, ginger beer, juices, and smoothies. Shen Zen Tea‘s lemongrass kombucha is refreshing, Timber City‘s signature ginger beer is a spicy treat, while Juice Harbor’s selection of cold-pressed juices are especially appealing to the younger crowd. If you are a hard cider fan, FinnRiver Farm & Cidery brings their their ciders and brandy wine to MIFM. Other vendors who have booths in the alcoholic section near Bicentennial Park are Stomani Cellars, Four Horsemen Brewery, and Lowercase Brewing.

Live music will be provided today by Ronnda Cadle, with guest percussionist Rikki Evans. Ronnda plays original compositions on her guitar and perfected her music while listening to female guitarists, her greatest mentors – Nancy Wilson of Heart, Caroline Aiken, and Emily Saliers of Indigo Girls. From Ronnda’s website, “I wouldn’t be the player I am today if it were not for these strong and amazing women. I hope to bring my own voice to the generations of women musicians to follow.”

Over at the Children’s Table the kids will be able to paint the colors of the market. Kids, stop by and explore all the colors of the rainbow that you can see at MIFM from the veggies, fruits, flowers, herbs, and art offered by local farmers and artisans.

This week’s featured vendor is well within the thirsty theme of today’s market. Check out the MIFM home page to read the interview with Julie Petrocelli, owner of Juice Harbor. She sells a wide variety of cold pressed juices, smoothies and elixirs (wellness shots), using predominantly local and organic ingredients to make them.

Have a wonderful day exploring the market!

Mercer Island Farmers Market: July 24, 2016

Mercer Island Farmers MarketThis week at Mercer Island Farmer’s Market (MIFM), they are celebrating summer veggies. Shoppers will be able to spot ears of corn, snap peas, cucumbers, peppers, a variety of summer greens, summer squash, tomatoes and more. Unlike the conventional grocery shopping experience, farmers market shoppers are able to find veggie varieties, and colors, that are usually not available at grocery stores. Stop by Lyall Farms, Alvarez Farms, Hedlin Farms, Kittatas Valley Greenhouse, True Her Gardens, Moua Gardens and Bao Gardens to see what veggies they have today!

Today’s live music at the market will be provided by Micheal Biller and Friends, one of MIFM’s favorite jazz ensembles. You’ll appreciate the classic jazz standards they will be playing along with more current selections.

Over at the Children’s Table, the kids can discover the sweet smells of summer. These lovely aromas come from herbs, flowers, and summer fruits and veggies.

The featured vendor of the week is Gourmini’s, one of the market’s newest food trucks to offer lunch. Gournami’s goal is to serve healthy food with big flavor to the people of the PNW. They make mini-sandwiches on Macrina Bakery baguettes accented by their house-made spreads, and a rotating menu of salads. Shoppers can mix-and-match selections to create the meal that will satisfy those hunger pains with healthy food. Head on over to the MIFM website to read their interview with Gourmini’s.

It is going to be a lovely day to visit MIFM. Enjoy!

Mercer Island Farmers Market: July 16, 2016

Mercer Island Farmers Market Today’s Mercer Island Farmers Market (MIFM) will include a special Senior social hour from 1:30-2:30pm, over at the Senior Connections booth. Sponsored by Covenant Shores, seniors can stop by to visit, enjoy some free refreshments and fresh treats provided by market vendors, plus listen to live music.

Live music will be provided by Beth James, an Austin based folk duo composed of singer-songwriters Jordan Burchill and former Mercer Islander, Mikaela Kahn. Their music features their own unique expression of Americana, which includes a blend of modern folk, mindful pop, and lush soundscapes.

Over at the Children’s Table, Little Red Hen needs assistance planting her wheat for the upcoming fall harvest. She needs her wheat to grow so she can bake her world-famous bread. The kids are encouraged to stop by and help Little Red Hen with her planting!

Today’s featured vendor at MIFM is Harvesting Autumn, an Omak flats farm that offers fresh produce and plant starts for purchase. You can learn more about Autumn Carroll, the resident farmer at Harvesting Autumn, as he tells his story in an interview on the MIFM home page. Click here to read Carroll’s interview.

Three Windermere Mercer Island brokers are market sponsors this year. Thank you Anni Zilz, Peni Schwartz, and Cynthia Schoonmaker for providing sponsorship support to help bring the Mercer Island Farmers Market back week after week for the 2016 season.
