The Mercer Island Farmer’s Market is set to open June 3rd and we hope to see you there!

They’re entire schedule has been posted, starting with their June 3rd Opening Day, so be sure to check it out!

This year, there will be 16 venues to host the festival. A few of these venues include House Studios, Lincoln Square, Ark Lodge Cinemas, Triple Door and Nordic Heritage Museum.

To celebrate and honor films, the Seattle International Film Festival presents tributes, galas, live music and film parties. The Color Run

The Color Run

The Color Run, also known as the Happiest 5k on the Planet, is coming back to Seattle this Sunday, May 13th. The Color Run was founded in 2011 with a mission to bring individuals together to create happy and fun memories, with less focus and worry on the running time. It has quickly become one of the largest running series in the world with over 6 million participants worldwide.

The vibrant and lively run is a five-kilometer and untimed event. At each kilometer, the runners will be doused from head to toe in different colors. There are only two things the participants must worry about – wearing white at the starting line and finish wearing an assortment of colors! Once participants have completed the race, they are welcome to continue the fun at the “Finish Festival”. This post-5k party will include music, dancing and more color throws! To peek into what the run looks like, you can view the colorful photo gallery here.

The Color Run proudly celebrates health, happiness, individuality and giving back. This event caters to all fitness levels, ages and backgrounds. Though this event is all about fun, they hope to encourage healthy and active lifestyles for all individuals. As a for-profit event management company, The Color Run partners with a wide variety of charities in order to highlight their work. They have raised donations for more than 80 local and national charities and have donated more than $5 million.

It is suggested to pick up your packet on Saturday, May 12th at the Check-In Party. You will also have the opportunity to shop at The Color Run Store and meet other runners. If you can’t make the pre-party, not a problem! On the day of, runners can check-in at the Seattle Center Pavilion beginning at 8:00 AM, with waves going until 8:45 AM. The starting line is a party itself with music, dancing, stretching and giveaways. If you are looking to jump start the morning, you can come early for a pre-race yoga warm-up with CorePower Yoga at 7:00 AM.

Though two of the participant kits are sold out, there are two left to register for online, today! To best plan your day, you can view the event guide for details including parking, directions and additional information. You won’t want to miss the fun at this colorful event!

2018 Windermere Cup

2018 Windermere Cup

This may be our favorite event of the year, the 32nd Annual Windermere Cup! Windermere Real Estate and the University of Washington are proud to host the women’s crew from the Dutch National Rowing Team and the men’s crew from Oxford Brookes University and the University of British Columbia as the challengers this weekend. The Windermere Cup Regatta will kick off Seattle’s Opening Day of Boating Season and will be followed by the Seattle Yacht Club’s Opening Day Boat Parade.

The annual event is known to be one of the premier regattas in the sport of rowing. Since 1970, the Opening Day Regatta has been tradition of the opening of boating season, with the women’s intercollegiate races added to the schedule in 1976. Beginning in 1987, Windermere Real Estate has sponsored the feature races, which include elite national and international crews. With thousands of fans coming in recent years, the Opening day races and activities have become one of the most exciting sporting events in the region.

There will be a total of 23 races this weekend, featuring athletes ages 14-70. Viewers are welcome to join an award ceremony and a presentation of the Windermere Cup Trophy near the finish line after the races, approximately at 12:30 PM. To best plan your day, you can view the complete schedule of events. Admission to the event is free and viewing will be available on the shores of the Montlake Cut.

With another tradition beginning, this will be the third year for The Battle of the Brave. The Seattle Fire department will compete against the Seattle Police Department in a 1,000-meter race through the Montlake Cut. Red and blue wrist bands and flags will be passed out to viewers on the shore. Choose your color to show your support for your favorite professionals who serve the local area. If your color wins, you can be one of the first 100 people to show your winning band and take home a prize.

If you are unable to make the races this weekend but would like to show your support, you can shop apparel online. For parking and transportation information, please visit here. We hope to see you this weekend!

Door-to-Door Pet License Canvassing Starts May 5th

Door-to-Door Pet License Canvassing Starts May 5th

Keep an eye out this week for door-to-door Pet License Canvassing. Mercer Island is part of the Regional Animal Services of King County, otherwise known as RASKC, and they’ve coordinated with the City of Mercer Island to canvas door-to-door in neighborhoods south of SE 40th Street to educate residents about pet licenses and offer resources for residents and their companions.

This canvas is set to start later this week, on May 5th.

Mercer Island’s last canvas was in 2010, so now is a great time to offer the benefits of pet licensing, which include:

  • Reuniting owners with lost pets
  • Providing licensed pets a free ride home the first time they get lost
  • Saving lives by funding King County’s pet adoption centers
  • Investigating of animal cruelty or neglect
  • Responding to reports of dangerous or nuisance animals

You can identify canvassers by their County logo bright blue shirts, name badges, and business cards.

If you’d like to get a head start, you can purchase your pet’s license from the KingCounty.gov website. If you already have a license, you can renew or updated on the King County website, or at any of these local locations.

For any major concerns or issues, please contact Mercer Island Police Department Commander Jokinen at 206-275-7914.

The Mercer Island Arts Council Calls All Artists for a Street Banner Design Competition

The Mercer Island Arts Council Calls All Artists for a Street Banner Design Competition

The Mercer Island Arts Council invites amateurs and professional designers alike to join in on the fun and action of a street banner competition. The Arts Councils strives to stimulate community awareness and advocate local artists and art organizations through education and artistic implementation – and this is one of many ways they’re doing so.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Monday, May 21st, 2018 @ 5:00PM PST
Submit to Diane Mortenson @ Diane.Mortenson@MercerGov.org

The objective for this friendly competition is to select five designs from one participant reflecting the spirit of the island. Decisions will be based off the competition’s theme, which is Island Icons.

When you think about the island, what do you think about? Do you think about the loamy waters lapping along the shores? Or the ingrained sense of engaged community, actively displayed at year-round celebrations and events? Or the astounding natural beauty of the island, maintained by countless hours of local employees and volunteers?

Regardless what you think about, you can put your artistic skills to good work and showcase your abilities for this 5-design, 18-banner competition. The 2018 notice outlines that there are no age limitations, and anyone may enter! But be sure to read through the entire packet to get all the requirements.

If you’re looking for all the information, visit the link above, or check out the direct file from the City of Mercer Island website.

For more information or any questions regarding the competition, please contact Diane Mortenson at Diane.Mortenson@MercerGov.org, or call 206.275.7861.
