The Mercer Island Farmer’s Market is set to open June 3rd and we hope to see you there!

They’ve for weekly entertainments, including the Mercer Island High School bands, Silk Road String Quartet, The Birdwatchers, and more! Music runs from 11am-2pm on market days.

They’re entire schedule has been posted, starting with their June 3rd Opening Day, so be sure to check it out!

Door-to-Door Pet License Canvassing Starts May 5th

Door-to-Door Pet License Canvassing Starts May 5th

Keep an eye out this week for door-to-door Pet License Canvassing. Mercer Island is part of the Regional Animal Services of King County, otherwise known as RASKC, and they’ve coordinated with the City of Mercer Island to canvas door-to-door in neighborhoods south of SE 40th Street to educate residents about pet licenses and offer resources for residents and their companions.

This canvas is set to start later this week, on May 5th.

Mercer Island’s last canvas was in 2010, so now is a great time to offer the benefits of pet licensing, which include:

  • Reuniting owners with lost pets
  • Providing licensed pets a free ride home the first time they get lost
  • Saving lives by funding King County’s pet adoption centers
  • Investigating of animal cruelty or neglect
  • Responding to reports of dangerous or nuisance animals

You can identify canvassers by their County logo bright blue shirts, name badges, and business cards.

If you’d like to get a head start, you can purchase your pet’s license from the KingCounty.gov website. If you already have a license, you can renew or updated on the King County website, or at any of these local locations.

For any major concerns or issues, please contact Mercer Island Police Department Commander Jokinen at 206-275-7914.

Mercer Island School District Gets Top Ranking on Recent Survey

The Mercer Island School District has long been known for its high emphasis on academics and extra-curriculars, and 2017-2018 reports show Mercer Island reigning over other Washington School Districts. Noted as a “friendly environment,” the district (MISD) strives to foster children and young adults by converting information into knowledge.

In a recent survey of over 9,500 schools, performed by BackgroundChecks.org awards the Mercer Island School District as Washington’s best public-school system. Mercer Island yields a 96.6% graduation rate, which is 15+% higher than the state-wide average of 81.9%.

Other top-producing schools include (2) the Lake Washington School District, (3) the Snoqualmie Valley School District, (4) the Bellevue School District, and (5) the Camas School District.

Though these figures vary from the Niche.com analysis, Niche also uses reviews from students and parents to configure their Best Schools. Their algorithm sets the Mercer Island School District as the second in Washington state. Check out this list of top school districts in Washington state, from Niche.com.

Complete and update report cards can be found on any school district and individual school statewide from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Washington State Report Card portal.

In such a diverse and ever-changing world, Mercer Island sets the example in education and sets its children as their top priority and offers accelerated and advanced courses to facilitate their learning.

A New Interlocal Agreement Around King County Will Help Mercer Island Fire Department Response Quicker to Fires

A New Interlocal Agreement Around King County Will Help Mercer Island Fire Department Response Quicker to Fires

The City Council approved a new Interlocal Agreement, which promotes “seamless emergency response among the fire departments throughout King County.”

In the past, Mercer Island has largely relied on Bellevue’s Fire Department and response systems to help with our city’s larger fire instances, but this new Interlocal Agreement (ILA), will allow for the closest available emergency response unit(s) to respond to 911 calls, “regardless of fire department jurisdiction.” This is a huge enhancement on Mercer Island’s current “mutual aid agreement,” which mainly bring aid from the City of Bellevue because it will allow Mercer island to call on help from the City of Seattle, “which previously required its firefighters to obtain permission to travel outside city limits.”

The City of Mercer Island provides “minimum staffing” to our fire department, which is seven firefighters at any given time. Not only will this newer, enhanced agreement heighten the city’s response times to larger events, such as house or multi-house fires, simultaneous situations, or an active shooter scenario.

For reference, the City of Mercer Island specifies that the ordinary house fire on the island requires 35-42 firefighters and a “typical” multiple casualty incident requires 12 or more firefighters to respond.

With the prime objective of safety on the Island, this seems like a great service to local residents and businesses. Fire Chief, Steve Heitman says, “We expect having this new seamless response system countywide will lead to improved coordination and faster response times, which in turn saves lives.”

Light Rail Rail Station Work Begins on 77th Avenue

If you haven’t already noticed, construction for the East Link Light Rail is underway, as of April 2nd. They’ll be working up to street-level along the 77th Avenue Southeast overpass, as part of the station plaza construction – and we can’t wait to see it take shape!

Crews have already installed temporary fencing, while they prepare and demolish parts of the existing landscape and then “install the headhouses structural steel, decking, and windows.” Work along 80th Avenue Southeast will follow during later steps in the year.

Expect work to continue daily, Monday-Friday from 7:00am-7:00pm, and the occasional Saturday should be expected. Construction is expected to continue into 2019.

It doesn’t appear that roads will be impacted, though the sidewalk will be redirected along an alternative pathway. The I-90 roadway will remain permanently closed.

We’re highly anticipating the arrival of our Station Plaza, as it’s another tick on the timeline towards our 2023 completion date.
