Home Inspiration: Outdoor Living Spaces At The Northwest Flower And Garden Show

On Thursday I attended an event at the annual Northwest Flower and Garden Show, which is currently going on at the Washington State Convention Center. I thoroughly enjoyed viewing all the different outdoor rooms shared in the gardens and vignettes throughout the show. It was fun to hear other garden enthusiasts ooh and ah over the landscape designs, and talk about how they would like to create something similar at their own homes.

The enthusiasm over outdoor living spaces at the show is not surprising, however, when you consider the popularity of outdoor rooms. In fact, investment in outdoor living space is a priority item for many homeowners according to the American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) Home Design Trends Survey on emerging home trends. The AIA compiled the data for this survey after the 2nd quarter in 2015, and 62% of the participating panel of 500+ architecture firms concluded homeowners find value in in their outdoor areas and place a higher priority on the financial investment in this part of their homes.

We can definitely see this sentiment portrayed on dream boards, and in the popular pins, all over Pinterest! There are also numerous online articles to inspire the creation of your outdoor living retreat. Sunset Magazine’s web page Great Ideas For Outdoor Rooms is packed with links to follow regarding the creation of outdoor living spaces including kitchens, nap zones, and stunning decks. Or you can check out House Beautiful’s 50 photo slide show Stunning Ways You Can Update Your Outdoor Living Space. A Better Homes & Garden article on 18 Easy Outdoor Room Ideas states, “Longing for an outdoor retreat but not sure where to start? Here are 18 simple ways to create a stylish, inviting outdoor room.”

It’s one thing to see something online, but it is often more meaningful to see it in person. And you still have the opportunity to check out the outdoor living spaces at this year’s Northwest Flower and Garden Show, so you can get a feel for what you’d like to do for your own home. The show is open today, 9am to 8pm, and tomorrow, 9am to 6pm. There are so many styles represented, from modern to rustic to urban to zen to traditional to eclectic. In the Marketplace you can discover unique gems to include in outdoor rooms, talk to product reps about elements used in the gardens on display this year, and find even more inspiration for the plants you can include in containers and surrounding garden spots.

Below is a sample of the outdoor living spaces you can see this weekend at NWFGS. Enjoy!
